TABLE OF CONTENTS:

FROM THE DESK OF ELLEN FISHER, PUBLISHER, WOMEN'S YELLOW PAGES

A couple weeks ago I overheard my daughter (who lives at college, but comes home to visit whenever she needs to do laundry or hears we have a good Netflix movie) ask my son (a high school junior who lives at home, but seems to be here less than my daughter now that he has discovered the sport of Ultimate Frisbee and was handed the keys to my old minivan) if he planned on going to his Junior Prom. Much to her surprise, he replied, "Yeah. I've had a date for a while." After a bit of probing by my daughter, he revealed the name of his date. Turns out she's a girl with whom he had gone to elementary school, and who lives two streets away.

I wasn't shocked that my son hadn't shared his prom plans with us because ever since he became a teenager he's held his cards pretty close to his chest. But the thing that really got to me was the revelation that I had no idea what this girl looked like (at least since elementary school graduation), or sounded like, because kids of this generation text message, IM, and call each other on their cell phones. It just didn't sit right with me that I wouldn't know which of the girls was my son's date when all the kids gathered for photos.

So the following day I took an out-of-the-way route home from the supermarket and drove up her block. Of course, she was no where to be seen. Feeling guilty, I confessed this parental dalliance to a friend. She didn't think I was a bad mother for wanting to know who my son was taking to the prom. She even mentioned that I could take advantage of the technology (MySpace, FaceBook, etc.) that this generation uses to keep their lives hidden from their parents. She sat down at my computer and, after a few keystrokes, called me over to take a look. There before my very eyes was an entire album of photos of my son's mystery date. I felt comforted as I scanned the snapshots of this cute girl making funny faces and celebrating the success of a sporting team.

Before we went tuxedo shopping I asked my son to find out the color of his date's dress. He said she hadn't yet bought one. My heart immediately went out to this girl's mother as I recalled the memories (akin to fingernails on a blackboard) of going from store to store and mall to mall for what seemed like two decades, shopping for my daughter's two prom dresses.

At the tuxedo store all the comparisons I had been making as I wished my silent son were more like my communicative daughter came to a screeching halt. Within a half hour my son got measured, chose from among three jackets,  selected one of the six shoe options, and decided to leave the big decision of bow tie versus regular tie, until he knows what his date is wearing. In case you are wondering, you can still rent a powder blue tux like the one my prom date wore, but my son went for traditional black. It was a joy to shop with him; we both left the store with smiles on our faces.

And so it goes in business, too. Every client or prospect has his or her own style and preferred means of communication. Remember to check out your clients and prospects by using the technological and networking resources available to you before you make contact. And when you do reach out, structure your approach to reflect the preferences of your client or prospect and emphasize the bonds you share. You may not want to go to the prom with every prospect or client, but at least you'll be confident about who is leading and who is following as you do the wonderful dance that we call business.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF WOB (Women-Owned Businesses)

Between 1987 and 2004, the number of privately-held firms majority-owned (51% or more) by women of color is estimated to have increased six times faster than the number of all US firms (55% vs. 9%). During the same time period employment increased by 62% and sales by 74% among firms owned by women of color.

PHILLY PHEMALE PHACT OF THE MONTH
Did you know that...?

The Henry Foundation for Botanical Research (801 Stony Lane, Gladwyne) was founded in 1948 by botanist and plant explorer Mary Gibson Henry (1884-1967). The Foundation covers 50 acres of a surprisingly remote site in the steep hills of Gladwyne near the Schuylkill River. From the 1920's until her death, Henry made botanical expeditions through remote areas of the West, Midwest and Southeast to collect unusual native American trees, shrubs, vines, and wild flowers to establish on her family's estate.
