FROM THE DESK OF ELLEN FISHER, PUBLISHER, WOMEN'S YELLOW PAGES

The end of the 2nd week of August I got a phone call from my husband's law partner, Jim, whose wife was the current high bidder on an ebay auction for a week at a villa in Tuscany. There were still a couple hours left before the end of the auction, but he wanted to know whether we would be interested in joining them, should his wife be the lucky winner. My husband was in the background yelling out that most people wait until the last minute to bid on this type of auction to keep the price down. Funny he should know this, because my husband who has never been on ebay, could win an Olympic Medal for being a Luddite. I told Jim that the timing wasn't good for us; the week starting August 29th is when we move my daughter back into college and when my son starts his senior year of high school. I thanked him, and hung up the phone.

Saying no didn't stop me from fantasizing about being in Tuscany. The last time I had been in Italy was 24 1/2 (clearly I've been counting) years ago. And, for probably the last dozen of those years, I've been lusting after an opportunity to spend more time there, especially in Tuscany. Within minutes of hanging up the phone I was daydreaming, picturing myself on an airplane, contentedly watching Under the Tuscan Sun on a portable DVD player, excitedly knowing that I would soon be living that life. There was no harm in reveling in this reverie because, as my husband so expertly stated, winning the villa was a long shot.

Jim called back later that evening, shouting into the phone, "Pack your bags!" He started sending emails with photos of lush, rolling Tuscan hills, and pictures of the ornate interior of the church-turned-villa. When I saw that the villa had its very own swimming pool, I started to cave. It was incredibly tempting to throw our lives to the wayside, pretend we were 25 years-old again, able to pack a bag at a moment's notice (well, 12 days, if you're really counting), and take off for parts unknown. But the responsible parent inside me won out and I declined Jim's invitation, yet again.

Even though we definitely weren't going to Italy, I stayed up late that night, trolling the internet to see if there were affordable, short-notice airfares. I wasn't about to admit that I had outgrown the ability to be spontaneous, so I decided I would let the too-expensive airlines be the bad guys instead. While secretly praying that I could find a good rate, I kept worrying that I was being a bad parent, leaving two teenage kids home alone to navigate the back-to-school roller coaster.

Just as I was thinking about how, if the situation were reversed, our kids, thanks to our rearing, would jump at an opportunity like this.... I magically found a flight within our budget.

So, while this email is navigating its way to you through the labyrinth of the internet, I am somewhere over the Atlantic, soaring to Tuscany, hoping we arrive in time to sit by our pool, sip a glass of wine, and choose which Michelin-rated restaurant sounds most appealing for a late dinner under the setting sun.

Our business lesson for this month is quite simple: If you work hard, you should also make time to play hard, as I am doing right now.

Ciao, Baby!

Ellen Fisher, Publisher Spontaneo (that's Italian for Spontaneous!)

PHILLY PHEMALE PHACT OF THE MONTH
Did you know that...?

Marian Anderson, the internationally acclaimed contralto (her birth date has been variously reported as 1902 and 1987; she died in 1993) was born and raised in Philadelphia, graduating from Philadelphia High School for Girls. She first performed in public at the age of 6 in a duet at Union Baptist Church (1910 Fitzwater Street) where she was a member of the junior choir. The Church nurtured her musical abilities and funded her first formal lessons when she was fifteen. In 1925 she won first prize in a New York Philharmonic voice competition, but few performance opportunities resulted so she went to Europe in 1930. There her great success attracted the attention of Sol Hurok, who remained her manager for the rest of her career. In 1939 Anderson became a household name when she sang to a crowd of 75,000 from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial after the DAR refused her the use of Constitution Hall. The woman who said, "I did not feel that I was designed for hand to hand combat," was admired as much for  her voice, which, Arturo Toscanini said "is heard once in a hundred years." Her lasting contribution to the concert repertory is her introduction of spirituals such as "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." In 1955 Anderson debuted with the Metropolitan Opera, the first African-American to do so, and she sang at Eisenhower's inauguration in 1957 and Kennedy's in 1961.
