TABLE OF CONTENTS:

FROM THE DESK OF ELLEN FISHER, PUBLISHER, WOMEN'S YELLOW PAGES

This Thanksgiving I was bestowed the honor of cooking the centerpiece of our family gathering, my step-mother, Kate-Kate’s, mashed potatoes. I could have simply shopped for the ingredients, followed the recipe to a tee, and been done with it...

But I am a Foodie. That means I spend a lot of time thinking about, talking about, and enjoying a wide variety of foods. The not-so-pretty side of being a Foodie reveals itself when I over-obsess about food themes, research menus ad nauseam, lose sleep over finding new and exciting dishes, cook way more than necessary, and find myself starting yet another recipe as my guests arrive.

With Kate’s sacred mashed potato recipe in hand, I slipped into an angst-ridden tailspin: How could I possibly match all the years of memories (lore, if you will) surrounding Kate’s potatoes? Kate was going to be at Thanksgiving dinner; what would she think of my batch?

After two weeks of torturing myself I decided that the best approach was to not make Kate’s potatoes. I read every cookbook I could get my hands on, scanned the New York Times and current magazine menu offerings, searched the internet for gourmet mashed potato recipes, and delved deep into my own extensive recipe collection, hoping to find something that would be both delicious and special enough to be the backdrop for new family memories.

Somewhere in the middle of this obsessive whirlwind of potato research, I told my husband and a few friends that I wasn’t going to make Kate’s mashed potatoes. They all told me I was crazy and that I’d be letting down the family. That’s when I realized that these potatoes were beyond-revered; they were a tradition not to be taken lightly.

So, with a bit of anxiety, I went to the store and bought all the ingredients for Kate-Kate’s mashed potatoes. And while I was there, I also bought the ingredients for my favorite garlic mashed potatoes. I made huge quantities of both recipes and happily brought them to Thanksgiving dinner. The whole family loved my preparation of Kate’s recipe and they also really enjoyed the garlic potatoes. There were plenty of leftovers which eliminated a decades-old fight over who would get to take home the few dollops of remaining mashed potatoes; this year everyone got a doggie bag. Without knowing it, after twenty years, I started a new family tradition – TWO types of mashed potatoes at every holiday meal!

Not one to rest on my Foodie laurels, I have already begun obsessing and researching so that I can perpetuate this new tradition of tried-and-true plus something new when we gather for both Chanukah and Christmas in December!

This recipe for success also works in the business world. The tried-and-true is what helps keep long-term businesses alive. But without adding something new, businesses become stale. So I encourage you to bring your unique flair to both the business table as well as the dinner table!

Happy holiday season!

PHILLY PHEMALE PHACT OF THE MONTH
Did you know that...?

Anna Hallowell donated Starr Playground (Lombard Street between 6th and 7th Streets), originally Starr Garden, to the city around 1882. At that time she helped establish a kindergarten and industrial school in the same area on St. Mary's Street (approximately Rodman Street today). In the late 19th and early 20th centuries this neighborhood was a center of both the city's immigrant and migrant populations and of many of the reform efforts of middle and upper class women. Susan Parrish Wharton (1852-1928), a Quaker like many of the other reformers in this area, began the St. Mary's Street Library (1884), a facility which grew to include classes in cooking and carpentry, medical services, a coal club and a savings bank in addition to book-lending services.
