TABLE OF CONTENTS:

FROM THE DESK OF ELLEN FISHER, PUBLISHER, WOMEN'S YELLOW PAGES

This year a record 44 friends and family RSVP'd to attend the Passover Seder at our house. I should have seen the foreshadowing of a pending disaster when my husband and son both got the flu a week before the event; but instead I barreled ahead, and took lots of Probiotics, drank alkalized water, and used the Neti Pot twice a day to cleanse and protect my nasal passages... and managed to stay healthy.

However, what I didn't see coming was the huge sewer pipe backup that flooded the basement an hour and a half before the guests were to arrive. When it happened, my husband was napping off a relapse of the flu and I was out buying fresh flowers, the finishing touch for a dinner that took a week of evenings to pre-prepare. When I arrived home, my husband was in the basement, shirt off, feverishly mopping up brown water (of Biblical proportions) with the help of my daughter, who always manages to dress for the occasion, this time in colorful rain boots.

My first thought was, "Passover is the story of an Exodus flight by Jews; that's what's going to happen here because I can't possibly host a Seder without running water." Later on, of course, I was able to see the irony of not being able to celebrate the story of a people who lived through slavery, war, and 10 plagues, all because there was no running water in my suburban home. But at the time all I could see was 44 people and no bathrooms!

While frantically calling for a plumber as well as garnering the advice and assistance of every neighbor within shouting distance, the woman who I hired to help serve the meal arrived. I explained the situation and she quickly put my panic into perspective, "It's just like when I was a little girl in Poland and we had to wash the dishes outside."

And then my relatives started trickling in, toting their boxes of matzo, bottles or wine, plates of unleavened desserts, and expectations of a family feast. They immediately took action, some helping in the basement, others helping with the tables and chairs for the Seder. We set up everything on the side porch of the house, including a mock tent made out of old sheets to really 'feel' like we were in a desert. Without water we were well on our way!!

As magically as the Red Sea parted in the Passover story, the water receded in the basement. And the Seder began. There were sounds of the plumber snaking the sewer line in the background, but that was music to my frantic ears. When it was time to serve the first course, water was again flowing in the house.

Everything seemed to be back to normal, until.... I went down the basement to grab something from the laundry room and I was greeted with flowing water. Between the time the plumber left and the dessert was served, the sewer pipe had cracked causing leak #2.

This tale of holiday woe brings to mind a story that Valerie Ginyard (VKG Associates), one of the Women's Yellow Pages' Women of Accomplishment, shares in her profile in the new, 2008-09 directory. It goes like this:

In 4th grade I was supposed to take a piano test on a song I hadn’t learned. I arrived before the teacher and began to practice the song when I         discovered that a piano key was broken. Thinking I was off the hook, I stopped practicing. When the Nun got there she told me to “Play it like         it’s not broken.” Ever since then, that’s the motto I use to overcome adversity.

All is now repaired (at least on the plumbing front) in our house, and we even had a new Instant-Hot faucet installed.

I hope you will remember to pick up your 2008-09 print edition of the Women's Yellow Pages so you can read the rest of Valerie's profile, as well as those of the other thirteen featured Women of Accomplishment. Or, if you prefer, you can access the entire directory online right now at www.philawyp.com.

PHILLY PHEMALE PHACT OF THE MONTH
Did you know that...?

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825-1911), a prominent abolitionist and poet, moved to Philadelphia (1006 Bainbridge Street) with her daughter in 1871, following the 1864 death of her husband. Her move followed a long lecture tour of the South where she spoke to both African-American and mixed audiences on the need for temperance, education, and higher moral standards among blacks. She continued to write and became active in the segregated National Women's Christian Temperance Union (serving as leader of the Negro branch from 1883-1890), organized black Sunday schools, served as a director of the American Association of Education of  Colored Youth, and was involved in organizing the National Association of Colored Women of which she became vice-president in 1897. Harper also advocated woman's rights and participated in both the 1875 and 1887 American Woman Suffrage Association conventions.
