FROM THE DESK OF ELLEN FISHER, PUBLISHER, WOMEN'S YELLOW PAGES
When my son and daughter were young, every Halloween season, we would be "Ghosted" or "Spooked" which meant that a neighbor would secretly leave a bag of treats on the porch and a paper ghost on the screen door with a note (in rhyme) about passing it on to other neighbors. As soon as my kids were both teenagers, the ghosting stopped. I can't say I missed it, but it did feel a bit odd to have out-grown a tradition.
Last week as I drove up my driveway, I noticed a big, bulky green garbage bag on the porch with a note attached. My first thought was that we had been welcomed back into the Ghosting fold. I laughed at how things had changed over the years and that the treats were so inflated they no longer fit into a little trick-or-treat baggie. But when I approached the trash bag, I knew I had been mistaken. It wasn't a giant pumpkin or a huge bag of extra large Milky Way bars (or many boxes of Asher's Dark Chocolate Covered Pretzels, which would have been especially sweet). No, it was...
... the computer monitor I had sold weeks earlier for $5 at our yard sale.
When I told my next door neighbor about this, she said, "Boy, you must have a really good return policy!"
I had sold the monitor to a guy I recognized, by face, from my political days. (While I am on the topic of politics, please indulge me for a minute while I step onto my soapbox to remind you to vote on November 4th.) Anyway, the note on the trash bag, which didn't even rhyme, let alone have a ghost, said that he couldn't get the monitor to work with his system and that I should contribute the $5 to a charity. I did, and would have put the donation in his name had he provided it.
The monitor is like a bad case of indigestion, or, to be more timely, like a ghost from days of yore that continues to haunt me. Many months ago I had given it to my nephew, but he didn't have room for it. And I had thrown it away, but was told by the trash collectors who returned it to me, that it had to be recycled on a special computer recycling day in our county.
Since it was on the porch on the exact spot where we usually put our jack-o-lantern, I thought about painting a face on it in lieu of carving a pumpkin for Halloween. But in the end, I decided that while it awaits its fate at the county recycling day this winter, it will act as my eyes, monitoring the comings and goings of my son who is supposed to be bringing up his grades instead of running around with his friends.
Every time I walk by it, the monitor reminds me that a good return policy (or guarantee) is the best way to run a business, especially in these tough economic times when people are more likely to spend their money when it comes with a feeling of security.
Ellen Fisher, Publisher whose monitor is watching you!
P.S. WAY TO GO, PHILLIES!!

PHILLY PHEMALE PHACT OF THE MONTH
Did you know that...?The first free Roman Catholic diocesan high school for girls in the United States, John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls' High School, (19th and Wood Streets) was made possible through the philanthropy of Mary E. Hallahan McMichan (1861-1925). Opening in 1912 with a student body of 550 and originally called the Catholic Girls' High School, the school adopted its current name in 1925 at the request of McMichan who asked that the school be named for her bachelor brother John, from whom she had inherited portion of her initial $100,000 donation. McMichan, who had been both "advisor and executive" in her brother's business affairs, was the mother of a daughter.
