FROM THE DESK OF ELLEN FISHER, PUBLISHER, WOMEN'S YELLOW PAGES
Thanks to everyone who sent wishes for a wonderful vacation in Tuscany. It was even better than I could have imagined. Too short; but I've never met a vacation that was too long!
Upon returning home, it took me a bit longer than usual to adjust to the time difference. I was probably hanging on to the lifestyle of being a tourist by day and sipping (guzzling is a bit more accurate) wine by night. But there was no question I was back in the States when I ordered gelato and was served something that was definitely much closer to ice cream.
Being home also meant filling out college applications with my son, tackling a problem with my daughter's over-scheduled sophomore year, and preparing for a neighborhood yard sale.
On the morning of said sale (advertised for 9:00 am), early-birds began circling our house well before 7:30. I shook my husband awake and, complete with bed-head and a ratty sweatshirt, he immediately hustled outside to put up tables and lay out our treasures of yore. But we were too slow for these savvy shoppers; most left before the goods were all displayed.
After this initial flurry, things were steady but on the slow side the rest of the day. My husband and I had an ongoing competition to see whether more of his stuff (mostly useless things like warped record albums and rotted-out speakers) or more of my stuff (very valuable and useful items like a barely-cracked antique mirror, slightly mildewed cook books, and a portable crib circa 1989) would end up in the trash at day's end. As that time neared, I tried to gain a lead by whispering to buyers that they could have 3 of my items for the price of 1. When this offer was refused more than accepted, I started to feel self-conscious about items that I had cherished and held on to for decades weren't enticing to others - even for free!
When the yard sale ended we still had 35 boxes left. A friend posted a Free Curb Alert on Craigslist.org, and that's when my favorite part of the sale began. Within 20 minutes, dealers and resellers magically appeared at our curb, stuffing their vans like sausages. Then came the people who merely love the thrill of the hunt. They also left with overflowing vehicles.
I thought more of my stuff had been taken, but as the sun started to set, there were 8 boxes left - half mine, half my husband's. That's when a woman drove up to our house. Her son had just returned from the war and was living in a virtually empty apartment. Together, my husband and I rooted through our goods and proudly outfitted this soldier with a TV, coffee maker, air conditioner, and other household items. For good measure we also gave the woman a huge garbage bag of Barbie items for her granddaughter.
As we watched her drive away with a smile, it was clear that we had both won. We had won the honor of being able to help others in need.
In business I also derive pleasure when I offer my services pro bono. The yard sale has reminded me to do more of this in the future.

PHILLY PHEMALE PHACT OF THE MONTH
Did you know that...?
Editor, writer, and teacher Jessie Redmon Fauset (1882-1961) attended Philadelphia's public schools, graduating from the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her undergraduate work at Cornell University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Fauset received a Master's Degree in French from the University of Pennsylvania (1919). Fauset taught high school French and Latin in Washington and then became literary editor of The Crisis (1919-1926), journal of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, where she mentored the young writers of the Harlem Renaissance movement. She also edited The Brownies' Book (1920-21), publishing many of the women of the Harlem Renaissance. In Fauset's fiction, according to scholar Cheryl A. Watt, "young men and women struggle against prejudice without succumbing to bitterness." Of her four novels, two are set in Philadelphia. There is Confusion (1924) and Comedy: American Style (1934).
