My daughter graduated from college! It's hard to believe, because it seems like just yesterday we were taking her to visit schools. The graduation at Bryn Mawr was beautiful, complete with a garden party where we were served by an underclassman (woman!). My daughter looked so happy and my husband and I had pride written all over our faces.
One funny moment came when all the graduates were trying to meet up with their families. The girls didn't have their cell phones since commencement gowns - and most fancy dresses worn underneath - don't have pockets. They were clueless what to do when the ceremony ended. Most of them had probably never had to find anyone without the aid of electronics. Back in the Pleistocene when I graduated, we made plans ahead of time by choosing a place to meet. How quickly we forget the importance of foresight and making plans in this world of technological immediacy. .
During the graduation, as each speaker talked about all the careers, opportunities, and paths these students might take, I couldn't help but flash back through my life. I realized that, rather than all the course work I had taken when I was a student, it was mostly social events that influenced my path. In particular, there were two very minor moments from the time I studied abroad, that became my life compass, pointing me in a direction I still follow to this day. One was when my best friend from my travels talked about her mother and an organization in which she was very active - NOW. At the time I had never heard of this group, but I had a feeling I would find a home among its members. And the second event occurred a few months later when I was staying with a family in Portugal. The husband treated his wife more like a slave than a partner, and I knew it was important for me to fight for women's rights.
I have no idea what minor or major events in my daughter's life will act as her compass (make that GPS, since kids today have no idea how to read a compass, either), but I am exciterd to watch as she continues to grow and come into her own.
Is there a business lesson in this? Of course there is. It's important to have a plan, but in business as well as in life, it's even more important to tune in to your gut and trust that it will lead you where you need to go.
