FROM THE DESK OF ELLEN FISHER, PUBLISHER, WOMEN'S YELLOW PAGES
While typing this letter I have a wonderful view of a nearly ripe pumpkin in my neighbor's garden. It was one of twelve seeds she planted in a discarded cardboard egg carton in late spring. When they sprouted, everyone in the neighborhood told her, “Pumpkins don't grow around here because they get Powdery Mildew.” She nodded and continued to nurture them. The seedlings grew large and were soon transplanted into a bed on the side of her house. Many neighbors commented that the spot she chose lacked the proper sunlight, but she just smiled politely and continued to tend to her crop. When all twelve plants flowered beautifully, neighbors reminded her of the looming mildew; she ignored them. On her daily garden tour, after picking the other fruits and veggies of her labor, she diligently searched her patch for the first signs of a pumpkin.
When mid-August came and there was no sign of anything that would eventually become a jack-o-lantern, I noticed that she quietly stopped looking. That's when I secretly took over. I snuck out to her garden every day to give the plants water and to hunt through the large pumpkin leaves. Late one night during the second week of my stealthy caper, my flashlight happened upon something that looked like a small green ball on one of the stalks. I couldn't believe my eyes! My neighbor was shocked when I sent her a text with this news.
The next morning a handful of neighbors gathered around us as we got our first daylight glimpse of the one and only pumpkin that would sprout from the bed. Thereafter, we both watered and watched as our pumpkin matured and went from looking like a baby watermelon to the real thing.
It is now mid-October and our pumpkin is almost 100% orange. It's still growing strong and hasn't shown the slightest hint of any mildew. It's on track to be ready just in time for Halloween carving.
This story reminds me how important support systems are at home and at work. We typically start our businesses or new work projects with great optimism, making it easy to stave off naysayers and also push ahead all on our own. It's almost inevitable that, as time marches on, we will hit a spell where the going gets tough, or where we feel overwhelmed, or realize that we just can't do it all ourselves, or maybe even lose track of our dream.
Whether you build a team of partners right from the start, or assemble one after you are more established, a support system is vital to the survival of a business. Your team can take over the tasks that aren't your forte or even jump in and nurture your business while you recharge your batteries.
Growing a business is way more complex than growing a pumpkin. That's one of the many reasons why we publish the Women's Yellow Pages, a directory overflowing with a community of talented women in business who are ready to become part of your support system. I hope you explore www.philawyp.com and reach out to the women in the online directory so that, together, we can all smile like jack-o-lanterns as we grow our businesses.

KEEP YOUR EYE OUT FOR <> <> THE 24th EDITION PRINT DIRECTORY
The 24th edition of the Women's Yellow Pages is at the printer. As soon as we have it in-hand (ETA is the end of October), every advertiser will receive two copies in the mail and all our distribution points will receive boxes. While we wait, we will be keeping our anticipation down to a low roar, by staying busy with tasks like updating the website with all our new advertisers, updating new distribution points where you can pick up a copy for free, and cleaning up the office of pizza boxes from our mad-rush to meet the printer's deadline. We are especially excited to announce our new Women of Accomplishment, and would love to do so right now, but we are keeping mum (speak of, we love these flowers that so typify the fall season) until the November eZine. Until then, please join us as we count down the days!
