FROM THE DESK OF ELLEN FISHER, PUBLISHER, WOMEN'S YELLOW PAGES
In preparation for Tropical Storm Irene my next door neighbor spent an entire day battening down the hatches. I watched from my kitchen window as he picked all the ripe and almost-ripe fruits and vegetables from his garden, stored all his porch furniture in his garage, and cleaned out all his gutters. I thought his efforts were a bit excessive since storms always seem to lose their punch by the time they reach Philadelphia. He even covered his kitchen table with flashlights, extra batteries, an emergency toolbox, and bottles of drinking water. He told me he had been eating as much food as possible from his freezer to either lessen his losses in case of a power outage, or to store food from my freezer which is prone to konk out during storms.
Maybe I should have taken the unprecedented earthquake we experienced earlier in the week (which I felt, but dismissed as a roofing contractor taking measurements even though I hadn't called on one to do so) as a bit of foreshadowing. Instead, I moved our trash cans into the garage and went about life as normal.
The storm delivered some pretty strong wind gusts and lots of torrential rain, but for the most part it was weakening, just as I had predicted....
Until 10:00 pm on Saturday night when the power went out.
It didn't come back on again until Wednesday.
The following morning as the storm waned, I put on my rain poncho and met up with all my neighbors to check for damage, gather up fallen tree limbs and branches, and compare notes on how we were weathering the storm. The homes across the street still had power and one neighbor invited us in for some much-needed coffee. Then each neighbor on that side of street ran a heavy-duty extension cord to the house directly opposite.
I have a refrigerator, extra freezer, and a dad who needs power to run his electric chair and feeding tube, so I was granted the extra bonus of having two cords run into my house. My family played roulette with the extension cords, rotating them as needed for charging phones, trying unsuccessfully to get wi-fi access on laptops, and plugging in the radio so my dad could listen to the Phillies. All in all we fared rather well. We didn't get a drop of water in our basement, nor did we lose any of our frozen food. .
When I opened the local yellow pages to call PECO, their number was no longer in the front of the directory; it had been replaced by contact information for homeland security. But what irked me most was when I called PECO and got a recording that told me to go to their website to find out about all updates. Don't they realize you need power to do that?
On Wednesday morning we plugged back in all our appliances, both big and small. I never thought I would say this, but it was quite a joyous feeling to hear my office computer boot up!
Fast forward two days to this Friday. My over-prepared neighbor, the one I had kidded incessantly during the storm because most of his preparations had been for naught, was in my basement doing some repair work when he discovered water on the basement floor by the freezer. I was shocked; it had worked perfectly with borrowed power during the storm.
It turns out my husband didn't plug in the freezer all the way and it had defrosted all over the floor. My neighbor got the last laugh as he carried all the salvagable food to his ready-and-waiting empty freezer!
Is there a business lesson in this? Absolutely! In order to succeed in business, you have to be plugged in. I am not just talking about appliances here. You have to plug in to your network of contacts, too. Speak of, I look forward to seeing you at many networking events this fall.
